Note by the artist: "This picture shows a view of Nagasaki as seen from Suwa Shrine, which some friends and I visited one New Year's Day. After climbing the long stairs we looked back over the heads of hundreds of ascending devotees to the splendidly restored city below; when, quite suddenly, we realized that this fortunate convergence of time and place had presented us with a most fitting and poignant testament of the indefatigable spirit of the Japanese people."
